There are a lot of ways to more affordable but adequate coverage. But at the same time, some methods people employ in order to reduce cost generally result in less than sufficient coverage. I do NOT naturally approve of such options as they rubbish the main aim of a Michigan home insurance policy in the first place. Bearing this in mind, I'll only give you tips that will also have you adequately covered despite saving you much. Here they are...
1.You'll spend more or less depending on your credit rating. People who have excellent ratings spend far less than those who have low ratings. If your credit rating is bad then you've been missing important payments. An insurance company takes this to mean that you are financially irresponsible and will likely default in paying your premiums. This makes you a higher risk to them and you, therefore, are made to spend much more than some other person with the same profile that has an excellent rating.
Therefore, it will do you much good to pay all your bills once they are due. It will help you get lower rates among other things.
2.Maintaining a government homeowner's insurance policy could be making you pay much more on your home insurance than you would otherwise. Natural disasters in some places made it very difficult for people there to obtain home insurance coverage. Then it was just the government's policy that was available to them. The story is quite different now as private insurance companies have started catering for such regions.
Many may still have little or no other way of getting home insurance coverage apart from a government homeowner's insurance. Nevertheless, this isn't always true as you may get better coverage at a lower price from some private insurance companies.
3.Having a smoker in your household will raise your rates considerably. Going by what reports reveal, about 23,000 residential fires can be traced to smoking. Non-smoking homes get better rates than households with smokers. If you quit smoking successfully for around 13 months, let your agent know it and ask for a well-earned discount. What if your insurer refuses to grant you discounts because some insurers do NOT give non-smokers discounts? Then it's time to shop for an insurer who does except you get something else to justify your continued stay with such an insurance company.
4.Shatter-proof windows will get you good savings. If you live in locations with high winds and hail storms have your windows upgraded to these and you'll get considerable discounts. Always remember to keep your agent informed whenever you take such a step. I recommend that you speak with your agent even before you start the replacement as he or she might make inputs that will bring in more savings.
5.Ensure that you fully understand the exclusions section of a homeowners insurance policy. Those are things that the policy does not provide coverage for.
While finding cheaper premiums is interesting, it is only when the cheaper premiums do not leave you compromised. However cheap a policy is, its purpose is defeated if it doesn't provide sufficient coverage. Before buying ensure you know what isn't covered to avoid unpleasant suprises.
6. You can save much by visiting not less than five Michigan home owner insurance quotes sites. If you do this, you will make it most likely that you'll get all the lowest quotes possible as five sites will present not less than 25 quotes altogether.
Here are my favorite quotes sites (highly recommended)...
